Thousands of tourists rent scooters in Bali every day without issues. But knowing these scams exist โ€” and how to avoid them โ€” is the difference between a great trip and a nightmare one.

๐ŸŽญ Scam #1: The Scratch Scam

How it works

You rent a bike from a street vendor. It looks fine. You ride it for 3 days. When you return it, the owner suddenly "finds" a scratch on the plastic bodywork. He gets angry. He demands IDR 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 ($120-$300) to "fix" it. He may threaten to call the police. If he has your passport, you're trapped.

The scratch was always there. Sometimes it's a scratch they made themselves after you parked it.

๐Ÿ‘ฎ Scam #2: The Fake Police Fine

How it works

You're riding through Canggu, Legian, or Seminyak. A police officer waves you over. He asks for your International Driving Permit (IDP). You don't have one. He shows you a laminated card with a list of fines โ€” the cheapest is IDR 500,000 ($30). He suggests you can "settle it here" with cash rather than going to the police station.

How to avoid it

๐Ÿ”‘ Scam #3: The Passport Hostage

How it works

The rental shop demands your passport as "deposit." You hand it over. When you return the bike, they find an "issue" and refuse to return your passport until you pay. You're stuck in a foreign country without your most important document.

How to avoid it

Never, ever, EVER give your passport to a rental shop. This is the golden rule. A photocopy or phone photo is sufficient. Any company demanding your actual passport is either running a scam or using practices from 2010. Walk away immediately.

๐Ÿ”ง Scam #4: The Sabotaged Bike

How it works

They give you a bike with known mechanical issues โ€” loose brakes, bald tires, leaking oil. When it inevitably breaks down, they blame you and charge for "repairs." Or worse, the bike breaks down in a dangerous situation.
